The great news is, the club has been an amazing success so far, even though we have had only three meetings! Players a young as six, and as old as 80, have enjoyed the chess association together. Please join us for our next meeting, on May 31, at the Marshfield Public Library.
Here on this page, we will have club news, events, and records. Check back, and keep on eye on our progress.

Local chess association forms

MARSHFIELD - If Saturday morning is any indication, the ancient and strategic game of chess is alive and well among local residents of all ages.
Tables of players sitting on either side of chess boards filled the forum room in the Marshfield Pubic Library at the first meeting of the Marshfield Area Chess Association.
Roma Shah, 8, had no trouble getting to the library at 9 a.m. to play chess with her father, Milind, both of Marshfield. "This is fun and interesting," Roma said. She explained the names of the chess figures and how each could move across the board.
"No that is not a castle; it's a rook," Roma said. "A castle is a kind of move," which Roma deftly demonstrated with a bit of help from her father.
"I learned from my father," Milind said. "It's a game that makes you think forward. Some of the principles learned in chess can be used every day. (Such as) trying to troubleshoot things to get the best result out of any situation."
Annie McShane, 13, of Marshfield learned from her father, too.
"He asked me if I wanted to play a board game. Chess is really different from all other board games," McShane said.
Playing across from Annie was Marisa Miller, 13, of Marshfield. The girls were fairly equally matched and at times stumped about who could move where. An adult, Randy Sherman of Marshfield provided the girls with tips about strategy and reminders about some of the rules.
Elijah Bell, 15, of Spencer founded the chess association.
"I've been playing on the Internet. But it's more fun with someone else," said Bell, who was directing the flow of people looking for someone to challenge at chess. During lulls in the morning, Bell played a couple of games, too.
